With the rising number of weight-conscious people around the world, fad diets are in full swing. A fad diet, as its name implies, is a diet that is usually promoted heavily through books, magazines, or even in television shows. They all say that the diets have amazing results that require very minimal effort. They usually provide before and after photos of people who claim to have tried their diet to convince people to try it too. Some newer fad diets offer a “scientific” approach to weight loss, but the truth is, upon close scrutiny, the science proves to be inconsistent at the very least. Be warned: most claims are false and it may cause more harm than good to your body.

Protein, Fats, Carbohydrayes and Glycogen in your Diet

Some diets espouse the healthy benefits of fats and proteins, thus encouraging higher consumption of these food groups. They also try to make you lessen your intake of carbohydrates, even cut them out altogether from your diet. Reducing carbohydrate consumption will make you lose weight rapidly. The truth is, you lose weight quickly because you lose water that your deposits of glycogen stored. Body weight drops because you lose the glycogen and the vast amounts of water it holds. However, fats are still there, and when you finally give up you fad diet, the body regains the water it was forced to lose. Regaining weight is actually as fast as losing it. The principle of this diet is if you cut back on carbohydrate consumption, your body starts breaking down and using your fats. On the surface, it may be beneficial, but in reality, it’s not. The absence of carbohydrates inhibits complete oxidation of fats, thus making these unable to be put to work. The result: weakness and fatigue. Additionally, breaking down fats results in the accumulation of ketone molecules on the blood. These are then disposed of through urine, which, in the long run, causes dehydration.

Restricting Calories shouel be avoided

Not all fad diets are harmful to the health. However, most stresses your body so much that it cannot be beneficial. The low or no intake of calories makes your body think that it is in the middle of famine, thus stressing your body in ways that are not at all safe. Diets that restrict calorie intake can cause damage to our system. Thus, these must be avoided.

In summary, watch out for diets that promise amazing results, claim to know the secret to losing weight, show exaggerated before and after photos, and restrict the intake of some food groups. These diets may be popular, but that doesn’t mean that they work.
